Compostable vs. Recyclable vs. Biodegradable: The Real Difference

Aug 29, 2026 · by WHOLE-PACKAGING Team

"Compostable", "recyclable" and "biodegradable" get used interchangeably, but they mean very different things. Understanding the difference helps you choose the right material — and avoid accidental greenwashing.

Recyclable

Recyclable means the material can be reprocessed into new products through existing recycling systems. Cardboard, paper and kraft tape are widely recyclable curbside. The catch: it only counts if customers can and do recycle it locally, and if it isn't contaminated (e.g. plastic tape stuck to cardboard). A recycled kraft tape recycles together with the box, avoiding that contamination.

Compostable

Compostable materials break down into non-toxic organic matter under specific conditions. Two important sub-types:

  • Home compostable: breaks down in a household compost bin.
  • Industrial compostable: needs a commercial composting facility's heat and conditions.

Always check which one applies — a compostable mailer bag is great, but customers need to know whether it goes in home compost or requires industrial facilities.

Biodegradable

Biodegradable simply means the material will eventually break down through natural processes — but with no guaranteed timeframe or conditions. This is the vaguest term. Something can be "biodegradable" and still take years, or leave microplastics behind. Treat "biodegradable" claims with caution and prefer "recyclable" or "certified compostable", which are more specific and verifiable.

How to choose

  • Want the simplest customer disposal? Recyclable paper and card.
  • Want organic breakdown? Certified compostable (state home vs. industrial).
  • Avoid relying on vague biodegradable claims alone.

Market it honestly

Only make claims you can back up, label clearly which bin the packaging belongs in, and prefer certified terms over vague ones. Honest, specific sustainability builds trust; vague claims erode it.
