How to Ship Heavy & Fragile Items Safely

Heavy and fragile items are the hardest to ship: they carry momentum, stress the box, and shatter or dent easily. Standard packing isn't enough — you need a method built for weight and delicacy at the same time.

Choose a box rated for the weight

Ordinary single-wall boxes flex and fail under heavy loads. Use double-wall corrugated (or heavier) rated for your product's weight, and don't reuse tired boxes — their strength is already spent. For very heavy items, consider a wooden crate or reinforced carton.

Cushion for impact, not just contact

Fragile-and-heavy items need cushioning that absorbs real force, not just a thin wrap:

• Suspend or float the item away from all walls with dense cushioning.
• Use biodegradable packing peanuts or foam to fill gaps completely so nothing shifts.
• Protect corners and edges — the first points to break on impact.

Double-box the most delicate goods

For high-value fragile items, place a cushioned inner box inside a larger outer box with cushioning between them. This "box-in-box" method absorbs shocks before they reach the product and is the gold standard for glass, ceramics and electronics.

Immobilize and reinforce

Movement is what breaks things. The product should not shift at all when you shake the sealed box. Then reinforce the box itself:

• Seal all seams with the H-taping method.
• Add heavy-duty strapping around heavy cartons for extra security.
• Reinforce the base, which bears the weight.

Label clearly and test

Mark "Heavy" and "Fragile" so handlers know, and place labels where they'll be seen. Then do a real test: lift, shake, and drop a packed sample from a low height. If anything moves or the box flexes, add cushioning or step up the box grade.
