How to Keep Food Fresh & Leak-Proof During Delivery

Sep 6, 2026 · by WHOLE-PACKAGING Team

A great dish can arrive ruined if the packaging fails during the trip. Sogginess, leaks and lost heat are the three enemies of delivery — and all three are solvable with the right packaging choices.

Beat sogginess with ventilation and separation

Steam is what makes hot food soggy. Trapped moisture turns crisp items limp within minutes.

  • Use vented containers (or lids with steam holes) for fried and baked items.
  • Separate wet and dry components — sauces and dressings in small clear deli containers on the side, not poured over.
  • Line greasy items with a grease-resistant sheet so oil doesn't pool.

Stop leaks at the lid

Leaks come from lids that don't seal and containers overfilled past the rim. Choose snap-tight lids, fill to the safe line, and for saucy dishes consider a tamper-evident seal — it reassures customers and prevents spills.

Hold temperature longer

Heat loss is about insulation and time. Pack hot and cold items in separate bags, use insulated delivery bags, and keep containers full (empty space cools faster). Kraft board holds heat better than thin plastic, so a kraft paper food container buys you extra minutes.

Pack the bag for the journey

Even perfect containers fail if they slide around. Keep bags snug, place heavier items at the bottom, and keep pizzas and flat items flat. Stable packing prevents the tumble that pops lids and mixes sauces.

A quick pre-launch test

Before adding a dish to delivery, pack it, drive or bike a realistic distance, then open it. If it's soggy, leaked or cold, adjust ventilation, sealing or insulation until it arrives the way you'd want to receive it.
