Label Adhesives Explained: Permanent, Removable, Freezer-Safe
Oct 28, 2026 · by WHOLE-PACKAGING Team

A label is only as good as its glue. The right adhesive keeps your label stuck where it belongs — through handling, moisture and temperature swings — or lets it peel off cleanly when that's the goal. Choosing the wrong one leads to curling edges, labels that fall off, or sticky residue that annoys customers.
Permanent adhesive
The default for most labels. It bonds strongly and is meant to stay. Use permanent adhesive for:
- Product labels that should never come off.
- Shipping labels and barcodes.
- Tamper-evidence, where removal should be obvious.
A thermal shipping label roll uses a strong permanent adhesive so labels survive the whole delivery journey.
Removable adhesive
Designed to peel away cleanly without residue. Ideal for:
- Promotional labels and temporary pricing.
- Returnable containers and reusable packaging.
- Anything the customer will want to remove (jars they'll reuse).
Removable doesn't mean weak — it holds well but releases cleanly.
Freezer and chilled adhesive
Standard adhesives can fail in the cold, causing labels to lift off frozen or damp packaging. Freezer-grade adhesives are formulated to bond at low temperatures and survive condensation. Essential for:
- Frozen and refrigerated food.
- Cold-chain shipping.
- Anything stored in a fridge or freezer.
Match adhesive to surface and conditions
Also consider the surface (smooth plastic vs. rough kraft), moisture, oils, and how long the label needs to last. When in doubt, test on your actual product in its real environment — a label that sticks on the bench can lift in a cold, damp fridge.
Quick reference
- Stays forever? Permanent.
- Peels clean later? Removable.
- Cold or wet storage? Freezer-grade.
