How to Make Your E-commerce Shipping Eco-Friendly
Sep 22, 2026 · by WHOLE-PACKAGING Team

E-commerce runs on packaging, which means every order is either adding to waste or reducing it. The encouraging part: shipping greener usually means shipping smarter — less material, lower cost, happier customers.
Right-size to waste less
Oversized boxes are the biggest source of e-commerce packaging waste: they need more void fill and burn more fuel per shipment. Stocking box sizes that match your products cuts material, emissions and cost in one move.
Switch to recyclable, compostable materials
Replace the plastic-heavy defaults:
- Plastic mailers → a compostable mailer bag for soft goods.
- Plastic tape → recycled kraft tape that recycles with the box.
- Plastic void fill → paper or honeycomb paper wrap for cushioning.
Cushion with paper, not plastic
Protective wrapping is a big plastic culprit. Expandable honeycomb paper wrap protects products like bubble wrap but is fully paper-based and recyclable — a straight swap that customers notice and appreciate.
Reduce total packaging
Beyond swapping materials, use less overall: fewer layers, no unnecessary inserts, and lighter fill where protection allows. Every gram removed lowers waste and shipping weight.
Make disposal obvious
Your green choices only pay off if the packaging ends up in the right bin. Add clear on-pack instructions ("Recycle", "Home compostable", "Reuse this box") so customers can dispose of it correctly.
Communicate it (without greenwashing)
Customers actively favor sustainable shippers, so tell your story — honestly and specifically. A note in the box or on the product page about your eco packaging turns sustainability into loyalty and word-of-mouth. Just make sure every claim is real.
Measure and improve
Track packaging weight and recyclability per order, and improve each cycle. Small, steady changes across thousands of orders add up to a meaningful reduction.
