Pizza Box Guide: Sizes, Materials, and Grease Resistance
Oct 24, 2026 · by WHOLE-PACKAGING Team

A pizza is only as good as it arrives. Get the box wrong and the crust steams soft, grease soaks through, and the customer's first impression is a soggy mess. Get it right and the pie lands hot and crisp.
Start with the right size
The box should fit the pizza snugly — about 2–3 cm of clearance around the pie. Too big and the pizza slides and cools; too small and the crust crushes against the walls. A 12-inch pizza box fits standard medium pies; stock one or two sizes that match your menu.
Choose the right board
Pizza boxes are made from corrugated board because the flute insulates and resists crushing when stacked for delivery. Look for:
- B or E-flute for a good balance of strength and printability.
- Sturdy corners that survive stacking in a delivery bag.
- A clean printable lid if branding matters to you.
Grease resistance is non-negotiable
The classic pizza-box failure is grease bleeding through the base. Choose board with grease-resistant treatment so oil stays inside and the box (and the delivery bag) stays clean. This also keeps the box recyclable-friendlier and looking professional.
Ventilation keeps crust crisp
Trapped steam is the enemy of a crisp crust. Good pizza boxes have small vent holes that let steam escape without losing too much heat. For extra crispness on longer deliveries, a small board riser or "pizza saver" keeps the lid off the cheese.
Delivery tips
- Keep boxes flat and level — never tilted in the bag.
- Don't stack more than the board is rated for.
- Deliver quickly; even the best box can't beat time.
