Plastic-Free Packaging Swaps That Customers Love
Oct 16, 2026 · by WHOLE-PACKAGING Team

Going plastic-free sounds like a big project, but most of a typical parcel's plastic hides in just a few components — tape, mailers, void fill and cushioning. Swap those and you eliminate the majority of plastic customers see, usually without raising costs much.
1. Swap plastic tape for kraft tape
Plastic tape is the sneaky plastic on almost every box, and it contaminates cardboard recycling. Switch to recycled kraft tape — it seals just as well and recycles right along with the box.
2. Swap poly mailers for compostable ones
Soft goods usually ship in plastic poly mailers. A compostable mailer bag does the same job — lightweight, water-resistant, protective — but breaks down instead of lingering as waste.
3. Swap bubble wrap for paper cushioning
Bubble wrap is pure plastic. Expandable honeycomb paper wrap cushions products just as well while being fully recyclable — and it looks premium, adding to the unboxing.
4. Swap plastic void fill for paper
Plastic air pillows and foam peanuts have paper and biodegradable alternatives that fill and protect without the plastic. Choose paper shred or biodegradable fills for gaps.
5. Swap plastic-laminated boxes for plain kraft
Glossy plastic-coated boxes are hard to recycle. Plain kraft and recycled board look clean, brand beautifully with a sticker, and recycle easily.
Why customers love it
Shoppers increasingly notice — and reward — plastic-free packaging. A plastic-free parcel signals that your brand shares their values, which drives loyalty, positive reviews and word-of-mouth. It's a rare win that's better for the planet and the business.
Start with one swap
You don't have to do all five at once. Start with tape or mailers (the highest-visibility, lowest-cost swaps), prove it works, then move down the list.
