How to Design Product Labels That Sell
Aug 17, 2026 · by WHOLE-PACKAGING Team

On a crowded shelf or a delivery app grid, your label does the selling before anyone reads a word of your description. Great label design isn't about being loud — it's about being clear, credible and memorable.
Lead with a clear visual hierarchy
A shopper scans a label in about a second. Guide the eye:
- Brand or product name — biggest, most legible element.
- What it is / key benefit — one short line.
- Supporting details — variant, size, flavor, claims.
- Compliance info — ingredients, warnings, barcodes — present but not dominant.
If everything is big, nothing stands out. Choose one hero element.
Keep type legible
Use high contrast between text and background, avoid tiny or decorative fonts for key info, and leave breathing room. A clean, readable label reads as more trustworthy — and trust drives the purchase.
Match the material to the product
Label stock affects both look and durability:
- Matte feels premium and modern.
- Gloss makes colors pop and resists scuffs.
- Waterproof/oil-resistant is essential for food, cosmetics and anything handled or chilled.
Circular custom brand stickers are a flexible way to add a logo or seal to plain packaging without a full redesign.
Use color and shape to own the shelf
Consistent brand colors make you recognizable across a range. A distinctive label shape or a wax-seal-style sticker can differentiate you in a category of rectangles.
Test before you print thousands
Print a short run, put it on the actual product, and view it at arm's length and in real lighting. What looks great on screen can disappear on shelf. Adjust, then commit to volume.
