Strapping & Banding: Securing Loads for Transport

When boxes are heavy, stacked, or bundled, tape and wrap alone may not hold. Strapping (banding) applies strong tension around a load to keep it compact and stable through the roughest parts of transport.

What strapping does

Strapping tightly bands items together or secures them to a pallet, resisting the forces that make loads shift, sag, or topple. It's the difference between a bundle that arrives tight and square and one that arrives loose and damaged.

When to use strapping

• Heavy cartons that could burst or shift.
• Bundles of items shipped together (pipes, boards, flat goods).
• Pallets with tall or heavy loads, on top of stretch wrap.
• Reinforcing boxes that take the weight of stacking.

A heavy-duty strapping kit gives you strap, tensioner and seals to band loads securely.

How to strap a load correctly

1. Position the load stably (square, balanced).
2. Route the strap around the load and, for pallets, through or under the pallet to anchor it.
3. Apply tension with the tensioner until the strap is tight and the load is compact.
4. Seal or crimp the strap ends securely.
5. Add a second strap perpendicular for tall or heavy loads.

Get the tension right

Too loose and the load shifts; too tight and you can crush the packaging or the product. Apply enough tension to hold the load firmly without deforming the boxes. Protective edge boards under the strap prevent the strap from cutting into carton corners.

Combine with stretch wrap

On pallets, strapping and stretch wrap work together: the wrap contains and unitizes, the strapping adds high-tension security for heavy or unstable loads. Use both for demanding shipments.

Safety first

Strapping under tension stores energy. Cut straps carefully (they can snap back), wear gloves and eye protection, and stand clear of the strap line when releasing tension.
